Governor Rick Scott has
requested that the U.S. Small Business Administration issue an Economic Injury
Declaration for Franklin County as a result of the
decline of the commercial oyster fishery.
The governor issued a letter Wednesday asking
that the Small Business Administration make a Disaster Declaration for Franklin County and offer
low-interest SBA disaster loans to businesses affected by the decline of the
oyster fishery.
Governor Scott said the economy of Apalachicola and Franklin County is tied inextricably
to the commercial seafood industry but that industry has experienced an
unprecedented decline in the supply of oysters within the Bay.
The collapse of the oyster fishery in turn has
caused a significant loss of income to commercial oyster fishermen, oyster
processors, and rural coastal
communities.
The governor said the associated economic
injury meets the threshold for an SBA declaration.
