Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison announces the arrest of Dakota Floyd Ake, (21), of Wewahitchka. On September 22, 2013, Gulf County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) Deputies
responded to Highway 22 in the area of Gulf Coast Electric Cooperative in reference to a
person who had been shot. When deputies arrived on scene they discovered the victim,
Peter Keukelaar (28), of Bay County, had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest with life
threatening injuries. Deputies learned Keukelaar was being rushed to the hospital by a
friend who witnessed the shooting, which occurred at Ake’s residence. Subsequently, he
was transported to Bay Medical Center by EMS where he underwent surgery.
Through further investigation, GCSO Investigators learned Keukelaar was shot with a
shotgun by Ake. The shooting occurred during an outdoor social gathering at Ake’s
residence. Based on witness accounts, Ake accidentally shot Keukelaar and at that time
no criminal charges were filed against Ake pending further investigation.
After interviewing numerous witness, it was determined prior to the shooting Ake
committed several weapons violations that led to Keukelaar being shot. Witnesses stated
Ake discharged the shotgun into the air several times and then pointed the shotgun at an
individual in a threatening manner. During the commission of that felony assault, Ake
discharged the weapon accidently, subsequently shooting Keukalaar.
On October 15, 2013, investigators obtained arrest warrants for Ake, charging him with
improper exhibition of a firearm, discharging a firearm while under the influence,
aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm, tampering with
physical evidence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Ake
has been arrested and released on a $27,000.00 bond.
