This week is National Fire prevention Week, and state officials
are urging all Floridians to be safe with outdoor fires.
We have had
a pretty wet summer which makes outdoor burning a little safer, but
now we are entering the dry fall and winter season when the risk of wildfires
increases.
Since
the beginning of the year, 1,933 wildfires have burned 47,256 acres throughout Florida .
Nearly
80 percent of all wildfires in Florida are caused by human
carelessness.
Besides
taking care with outdoor fires, you should also check to make sure you have a smoke
detector installed in your home, and make sure that the batteries in the smoke
detector work.
Statistics
show that in Florida only 40 percent of homes that suffered fires had smoke
detectors, and of those only 25 percent were actually working.
