Press release from the Orange County Sheriff's Office:
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is closely working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Florida Department of Corrections (D.O.C) and Central Florida law enforcement officials as we search for two inmates who were erroneously released on 9/27/13 and 10/08/13 from the Department of Corrections-Franklin Correctional Institution, Franklin County, Fl.
On 10/15/13, when they became aware of it, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement advised the Orange County Sheriff’s Office of the escapees’ release, due to the fact the subjects were past residents of Orange County and their convictions derived from crimes committed in Orange County and the City of Orlando.
Today, through investigative means it has come to light that at least one of the suspects may be in Orange County.
Sheriff’s Demings priority is to use all resources to apprehend the subjects and bring them into custody. The F.D.L.E. has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the release.
F.D.O.C. Secretary Michael Crews has pledged his support for state and local law enforcement efforts in locating the suspects.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is notifying the community of these releases and seeking our residents’ assistance in apprehending both individuals should they return to Central Florida and Orange County.
Comment from the Department of Corrections:
“The Department of Corrections is working closely with Sheriff Demings, state and local law enforcement to locate inmates Charles Walker and Joseph Jenkins and return them to custody as soon as possible. Inmates Walker and Joseph were both released in accordance with Department of Corrections policy and procedure; however, their releases were based on fraudulent modifications that had been made to the court orders that determines their length of sentence.
In addition to participating in the search, the Department is conducting a vigorous and thorough review of releases that were based on modified court orders received from Orange County to ensure that there are no other inmates who have been released based on falsified documents. The top priority of the Department is the safety of Florida families and we’ll continue working with law enforcement to ensure these men are returned to custody.”
Michael Crews
Florida Department of Corrections Secretary
