the old Apalachicola High School site named after Mayor Van Johnson

The old Apalachicola High School now has a new name.

The site was renamed the “Mayor Van W. Johnson, Sr., Recreation and Community Service Complex’ during Tuesday’s Apalachicola City Commission meeting.

The request was made by City Administrator Betty Webb, to honor the mayor who was instrumental in obtaining the school site for city use.

The city took over the property to use as a youth center, and it has become much more than that.

The old school currently houses a number of youth and community service organizations including the Franklin's Promise Coalition, the food pantry, the Franklin County Public Library Tigers Program, the City's Project Impact After school and Summer Enrichment Program, and the city’s youth center.
