Franklin County approves resolution supporting Capital City to Sea Trail study

Franklin county commissioners have approved a resolution in support of a plan to evaluate potential corridors for a major bike trail that would connect Tallahassee to the coast.

The board on Tuesday approved a resolution of support for a planning study of the Capital City to Sea Trail corridor from its current proposed terminus in Wakulla county to Carrabelle.

The funding for the planning study is being sought from the Florida department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternative Program, and it would use federal funds so the county would not have to pay anything.

It would likely be 2016 before the study is done and once that’s complete the county will have to approve any further action.

The bike path would be a part of a 120 to 150 mile trail called the Capitol city to sea loop connecting Tallahassee, St. Marks, Medart and Sopchoppy and possibly extending into Franklin County.

The path would go along state roads as well as use parts of the old Georgia, Florida, and Alabama railroad.

Parts of the path are already complete – one section along the Ochlocknee Bay is already being widely used.
