Carrabelle city commission to consider allowing drone maker to use Hexaport building

The Carrabelle City Commission will hold a special meeting next week to decide whether to allow Gulf Unmanned Systems Center to open up shop at the Hexaport Building near the Carrabelle airport.

Gulf Unmanned Systems creates and tests the unmanned drones – they say Franklin County geography is perfect for what they do.

The company is seeking a long term lease with the City of Carrabelle to use the Hexaport Building as the Unmanned Systems Complex.

The building is seven years old and has been vacant for the past three years.

An agreement has been reached with Centennial Bank, the current leaseholder, subject to City approval.

If it gets city approval, the company says it would make an initial investment of $890,000 for improvements to the interior of the building for offices and research labs as well as nearly 30 thousand square feet to flight test unmanned vehicles in a secure inside environment.

The company says it would create 10 jobs within the first 30 days of opening and then 10 more in the next three years.

The Carrabelle City Commission will meet on Tuesday, February the 18th at 4 PM to consider the issue.
