County takes next step in new hospital project

The Franklin County commission has approved the next step toward building a new hospital in Apalachicola.

On Tuesday the commission agreed to spend 60 thousand dollars on an opinion letter that will be needed to secure a loan for the hospital construction.

The money will go to a company called BKD which will look at the hospital’s financial data and provide an official opinion on how much the hospital can borrow.

Hospital CEO Ray Brownsworth said the hospital construction plans could not move forward that without that letter.

The current plans are for construction to be complete sometime in late 2016, and a cost of a little over 10 million dollars.

Franklin county voters approved a one cent sales tax increase in 2007 to pay for the costs of upgrading or replacing the aging hospital.
