Franklin county Commissioners approve 700 thousand dollars in Armory repairs

County commissioners agreed this week to spend about 700 thousand dollars on necessary repairs to the Armory in Apalachicola.

The work will include fixing a draining issue off of Avenue A where water is seeping under the Armory and causing the building to settle.

The building will also be stabilized in that area to keep it from settling further.

The project will also include adding 40 tons of air conditioning to the building, moving the bathroom facilities, and installing a new entranceway and doors on the side of the building.

The project will be paid for through the Tourist Development Council.

The TDC expects to have about 500 thousand dollars by the end of this year and another 250 thousand dollars for the project next year.

The work is the most necessary parts of a much larger project to bring the 114 year old building up to code so it can be used as a convention center and destination for private events like weddings.

Completely renovating the building will cost nearly 2.4 million dollars.
