The National Hurricane Center is making a few changes to the information it
provides when hurricanes form.
Beginning with the 2014 Atlantic
hurricane season, NHC will issue the Potential Storm
Surge Flooding Map for areas
along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United
States at risk of storm surge
from a tropical cyclone.
The maps will let you know which
area could get hit hardest by storm surge and the
height above ground that the
water could reach.
The Hurricane Center said the maps are based on the latest forecast
track
and intensity for the tropical
cyclone will provide a reasonable worst-case scenario for individual locations
under threat from a major storm.
The maps would be issued whenever
a hurricane watch or, in some cases, with a tropical storm watch first takes
effect and change every six hours as new information becomes available.
Hurricane season begins June 1st.
This is the time of year when
emergency management officials recommend people begin preparing for storm
season.
