"Nunn Better" proves there is none better when it comes to chili

Beautiful weather brought a nice crowd to St. George Island this weekend for the 32nd annual Charity Chili Cook-off and Auction.

"Nunn Better 2 Chili" out of Fort Pierce, Florida took first place in the professional chili cook-off, earning a 500 dollar cash prize and the opportunity to compete for 25 thousand dollars at the National chili cook-off.

In fact the Nunn Better family swept the competition this year – The "Nunn Better Original" team took second place and 300 dollars and "Nunn Better Also" took third place and a 200 dollar prize.

There were 36 teams in the competition this year.

This year also brought the first ever salsa competition – there were 8 entries and the winner was Spice Boys 1 out of Alabama.

They will get to go to the national salsa competition for their win.

The crockpot chili winners this year were Karen Andrew and Lois Hauff from St. George Island.

Clifton Gardner of Team Water Dog out of Tallahassee won the Mister Hot Sauce title this year.

Austin and Allie with firefighters forever out of Apalachicola shared this year’s Miss Chili Pepper title.

Team toilet bowl won best booth, probably because they were selling shots in a two-person outhouse.

Stanley Linton of Tallahassee came in first in the 5K Red Pepper Run with a time of 16 minutes and 21 seconds, nearly 4 and a half minutes faster than the second place runner.

You can see pictures of the winners and of the chili cookoff on the news page at oysterradio.com or on our facebook page.

The St. George Island Fire Department is still totaling the amount raised over the weekend through the cookoff and the charity auction and expect to release figures later this month.

All of the money raised on Saturday helps fund the St. George Island Fire Department and first responders unit – it makes up about half of their budget.
