Deployment for artificial reef off Carrabelle delayed until next week

Plans to deploy a new artificial reef off the coast from Carrabelle have been delayed by a few days.

The plan was to deploy the reef this week, but because of delays on another project, the contractor has decided to wait until after this weekend’s Big Bend Saltwater Classic, fishing tournament.

Now the reef deployment will likely happen early next week.

It will take two days of work to get all of the material on the bottom.

The new artificial reefs will be deployed about 10 miles off of Carrabelle just a little south of the popular “Robby’s Reef” which was deployed in 2011.

The project will include three patch reefs constructed of large concrete and limestone prefab reef structures, which will stand 15 feet above the gulf sea floor in a depth of 60 feet.

Those will be framed with ten 8 foot tall reef structures which also utilize native Florida limestone as part of their makeup.

At the same time, contractors will enhance Robby's Reef, which will add another 8 artificial reef units to the patch reef deployed in 2011.

We’ve posted the coordinates for the new reef on this story at oysterradio.com and on the oyster radio facebook page.

The center coordinates listed for the Camp Memorial Reef are given in "Decimal Minutes" format and listed as:

N  29 39.229

W 84 30.000
