The Cape San Blas Lighthouse will be moving to Port St. Joe this
week.
As long as the weather cooperates, the city plans to move the
lighthouse, two keepers quarters and the oil house from its current location on
the Cape to its new home at George Core Park in Port St. Joe.
The lighthouse is about 100 feet tall and close to 60 tons and
it is being moved in one piece.
The caravan moving the lighthouse could be nearly 900 feet.
The journey should begin around 8 0’clock in the morning and it
will likely be well into the evening before the lighthouse reaches its final
destination.
The plan is to erect the lighthouse on Wednesday.
The City of Port St. Joe said that during the move residents
and businesses could experience localized power outages.
Transporting the lighthouse will also require both lanes so
driving around the Cape could be difficult in the morning and afternoon and in Port St.
Joe in the evening.
Local residents will be able to access the roads on a very
limited schedule and detour routes will redirect traffic from Cape San Blas to
C-30 A eastbound to Highway 98.
The lighthouse has been at Cape San Blas for over 100 years, but
erosion and weather are threatening the structure, so it is being moved to Port
St. Joe where it will be better protected.
