Florida has money to help landowners eradicate cogongrass

The Florida Forest Service has money available to help Florida landowners to get rid of cogon grass.

The state says cogon grass is considered one of the worst weeds in the world, and it is a priority for Florida to eradicate this threat.

Cogongrass infestations increase the risk and effects of wildfires, degrade the quality of forests and out-compete native vegetation.

The program provides reimbursement of 50% of the cost to treat Cogongrass infestations for two consecutive years.

The most the program will cover is 20 thousand dollars over two years.

The program is available in all Florida counties.

Applicants who wish to conduct treatments in 2014 may apply from September 22nd through October 3rd.

Applicants who wish to conduct treatments in 2015 may apply from Oct. 6th through February 27th.
