High Fire Danger Potential Expected Over Weekend – Be Vigilant With Outdoor Activities

The Florida Forest Service wants the public to be aware of high fire danger over the weekend in the seven Chipola counties: Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Walton and Washington County. Humidity is expected to drop significantly and high winds with gusts up to 31 mph are expected on Saturday.

“The mid-week rain showers in our area can be very deceiving,” said Johnny Sabo, Chipola Center Manager. “The reality is, we haven’t had a good rain in at least 19 days and the forecast doesn’t show any in the near future.”

Without a significant rainfall, it doesn’t take much to ignite a potential wildfire so we want to stress the importance of being vigilant. Under these conditions sparks can ignite easily and fires will spread quickly.

Outdoor burning is discouraged on Saturday and citizens are asked to report any new fires or suspicious smoke. To report a wildfire, call (850) 547-7083.

Safety of the public and first responders is of the utmost concern; and with Saturday’s weather forecast, one of the main threats for firefighters will be rapid spread of any fire start.
