Midweek Red Tide Update 10/22/14

Midweek Red Tide Update: Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was not detected in samples analyzed so far this week in and alongshore of Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Wakulla, Taylor, Dixie, Levy, or Pasco counties.  In southwest Florida, several samples collected in and alongshore of Charlotte and Lee counties contained background to low concentrations of K. brevis.

Satellite images from the Optical Oceanography Laboratory at the University of South Florida show bloom patches offshore of Franklin, Wakulla, Jefferson, and Taylor counties in the northwest Gulf of Mexico and along and offshore of the Sanibel Island area (Charlotte and Lee counties)in southwest Florida. Samples along and offshore of Charlotte and Lee counties confirm a bloom ofK. brevis in this region.

Forecasts by the USF-FWC Collaboration for Prediction of Red Tides (CPR), a partnership between the University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, project W/NW movement of surface waters and no movement of bottom waters offshore of Franklin, Wakulla and Taylor counties; W/NW movement of surface waters and inshore movement of bottom waters offshore of Dixie and Levy counties; and little movement of waters offshore of Charlotte and Lee counties.
