State officials say they are no longer detecting red
tide off the coast of Franklin County.
The organism was
detected in very low concentrations last week off one location on St. George
Island.
This week red tide was not detected in samples analyzed in and alongshore of
Bay, Gulf, Franklin, Wakulla, Taylor, Dixie, Levy, or Pasco counties.
In southwest Florida, several samples collected in and
alongshore of Charlotte and Lee counties contained background to low
concentrations of red tide.
State
officials have been monitoring a patchy bloom of red tide in the northeast
Gulf of Mexico for weeks.
Red Tide is a organism that in large enough
concentrations releases a neurotoxin that can kill fish and even affect humans.
It was last
seen in Franklin County in 2005, when it closed the Apalachicola bay to oyster
harvesting for close to 6 months.
