City to Host Stormwater Planning Workshops
The Apalachicola Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Board will hold a planning workshop at 5 p.m., Monday, November 10, 2014 at the  Apalachicola Community Center, located at Battery Park, 1 Bay Avenue, to discuss the City’s upcoming stormwater planning initiative. A representative from Preble-Rish Engineers will also be on hand to update the board on the ongoing stormwater construction projects throughout the City.
Topics for the November 10 workshop include an overview of the City’s current stormwater land development regulations along with public discussion for suggested revisions. Feasibility of a stormwater management utility program and the development of public information materials about site specific stormwater management treatment options for private and commercial property owners will also be discussed.
The November 10 stormwater workshop relates to ongoing P&Z discussions about FEMA-mandated floodplain management rule changes in the City. Future workshop will focus on including the identification of historic structures in the special flood hazard (rated A & V zones), a discussion of the impact of the new floodplain management rules on historic structures and an update on the City’s efforts towards inclusion in the Federal Community Rating System (CRS) program. Upcoming workshops will also include discussions with invited state historic, environmental and floodplain management experts on the potential impacts of sea-level rise along with a discussion of how the city can adapt its land use regulations to accommodate development within the floodprone areas.
The November 10 workshop will precede the board’s regularly scheduled meeting scheduled for 6 p.m.
The City’s planning workshop series is an ongoing effort by the city to address planning issues relevant to the city. Past workshop topics have resulted in proposed land use changes relating to solar panels, fences, travel trailers and development of historic city squares.
