Federal fishery disaster funds that were set aside for
seafood dealers should be available by the beginning of December.
When
Franklin County’s oyster industry was declared a fishery disaster in 2012, the
federal government made 6.3 million dollars available to help rebuild the
fishery.
About 700
thousand dollars was set aside for seafood dealers to make repairs to their
seafood houses.
County
Director of Administrative Services Alan Pierce said The Florida Department of
Agriculture hopes to receive the funds
by December the 1st.
If you are a
seafood dealer, don’t start doing any work on your seafood houses yet.
Mister
Pierce said this is a reimbursement program so seafood dealers will not get
reimbursed for any repairs that are done before the dealer and the Department
of Agriculture have an agreement.
Mister
Pierce added that the money can only be used for repairs, not expansion.
