Franklin County seeks continued designation as Rural Area of Critical Economic Concern

Franklin County commissioners have agreed that Franklin County should continue to be designated as a Rural Area of Opportunity – which the state once called Rural Area of Critical Economic Concern.

The designation, which Franklin County has held since 1999, gives our area greater access to the state’s economic development incentive programs.

It’s designed to bring more businesses to the area by directing more state grant money here and providing waivers that allows counties in our area to apply for money they may not normally have access to.

Currently 9 counties in our area have the designation including Gulf, Wakulla and Liberty counties.

The designation lasts for 5 years and the current designation expires at the end of the year.

Opportunity Florida, on behalf of the 9 counties, is getting each county to adopt a Resolution requesting the Governor continue the designation for an additional five years.

Once that is complete,. Opportunity Florida will present all 9 resolutions at one time to the Governor for action.
