County
commissioners expressed concerns this week over a proposed change in the St.
George Island State Park management plan that would allow a 30 slip boat dock in the park.
The board issued a letter on Tuesday voicing concerns over
the proposed boat dock which would also include a picnic pavilion and bathhouse
for overnight stays.
5 state parks in Florida have something similar.
Commissioners said their biggest fear is that the dock would
actually constitute a marina which could require closing oyster bars near the
area.
There were also concerns raised about the lack of public
input into the creation of the management plan – commissioners said if the
public had been asked earlier the boat dock proposal would likely not have made
it into the proposed plan.
A public hearing on the issue last month showed public
sentiment is also against the dock.
The
management plan spells out the various uses of the state park and any proposed
changes that park may see over the next 10 years.
Other updates being proposed include
creating a 30-site camping loop to expand family camping
opportunities as well as adding more primitive campsites and six cabins.
They would also like to add bike lanes on each side of the main road
in the park
Commissioners said they have no problems with the other
changes to the management plan.
