DEP to re-etablish management at area aquatic preserves

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has received a grant that will allow it to re-establish the management of the St. Andrews Bay and St. Joseph Bay Aquatic Preserves.
The grant is through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
The project will affect over 97 thousand acres of fragile and environmentally sensitive land through a comprehensive management program, seagrass monitoring, and education and outreach to boaters and local communities.
The Apalachicola National Estuarine Reserve will oversee the preserves and has hired Katie Maxwell as the new manager overseeing both the St. Andrews Bay Aquatic Preserve in Bay County and the St. Joseph Bay Aquatic Preserve in Gulf County.
Maxwell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Marshall University and a Master of Science degree in marine biology from Coastal Carolina University.

She worked with FWC’s Fisheries Independent Monitoring Program as a biological scientist for the past four years.
