GULF COUNTY SCHOOL HEALTH TEAM DEEMS STUDENT FLU VACCINATION CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS

Port St. Joe, FL- Flu season has arrived and the Florida Department of Health in Gulf County (DOH-Gulf) has made successful strides in providing influenza (flu) vaccinations to youth.  Each year, the DOH-Gulf School Health Team partners with the Gulf County School District to kick off a flu vaccination campaign. The campaign, which began in October, provides seasonal flu vaccinations to students during regular hours at each school location.

“Each year, our student flu vaccination numbers continue to increase,” said Amy Driggers, School Health Coordinator for the Florida Department of Health in Gulf County. “When more children are vaccinated against the flu, flu cannot as easily spread through the school system and into the community.”

This year, 325 flu shots were provided to K-12 students at the schools. Permission forms were sent home and returned, making this initiative convenient for parents and caregivers who are not able to take off work or schedule an appointment for their child.

There were 169 additional flu shots provided to youth at both health department clinic locations (Port St. Joe and Wewahitchka) for an overall total of 494 vaccinations.

“The flu is more dangerous than the common cold for children,” said Marsha Lindeman, Administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Gulf County. “The single best way to protect your children from the flu is to get them vaccinated each year. Our School Health Program is committed to protecting the health of this community through prevention of communicable diseases in our children and their families.”

DOH protects, promotes and improves the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts.  For more information, contact the Florida Department of Health in Gulf County at 850-227-1276 or visit us at http://gulf.floridahealth.gov.
