Franklin
County Commissioners are tightening up the county rule that covers where
campers and travel trailers can be stored.
The current rule was created in 1982 and it allows people to
store or park their travel trailers on any lot they own in the county, provided
the trailers are not occupied.
County Administrative Director Alan Pierce said that allows people
who own residential lots to leave their trailer on their property permanently,
and then periodically come down and use it.
That has led to the problem of people basically moving into
campers on residential lots which is leading to more complaints from
homeowners.
Mister Pierce said the issue is not actively policed – there’s
not enough staff for that.
The County usually becomes aware of an issue is if someone
complains.
The county has decided that the best way to address the
issue is just not allow people to store their campers on vacant lot.
The county now plans to change the rule by only allowing travel
trailers to be stored on lots with a dwelling.
That will make it easier to police and harder for utilities
like water to be connected to a camper.
Existing campers will not be grandfathered.
If the rule is changed, people around the county who are
living in campers will have to find somewhere else to live.
A public hearing on the issue will be held in the next
month.
