TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – State Senator Bill Montford (D-Tallahassee) today responded to a December 21 bear attack in Eastpoint, Florida.
“First and foremost, my thoughts are with 15-year-old Leah Reeder and her family. We are praying for a speedy recovery and hope she will be able to enjoy the holidays at home.”
“On Sunday evening Miss Reeder was walking her dog in Eastpoint when she was viciously attacked by a bear. Florida prides itself on its variety of wildlife but all too often overpopulated and out of place animals become a danger to society. This is why almost a year ago on January 8, 2014 I asked the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to speak to my committee, the Senate Committee on Agriculture.”
“In my discussions with FWC Executive Director Nick Wiley and Representative Halsey Beshears, we all agree attacks like this are unacceptable and we need to ensure every possible measure is being taken to reduce the chances of another incident. We cannot be afraid to leave our homes and businesses. I look forward to working with FWC, Representative Beshears, State and local officials, and our citizens to find a balance between protecting wildlife and providing safe communities for Floridians and visitors.”
“If anyone sees threatening bear activity they should immediately call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at (888) 404-FWCC (3922). I look forward to working with the FWC to establish a plan for the future prevention of such attacks.”
