If
you catch a lionfish in Florida waters you can now report it using an app on
your smartphone.
The
Report Florida Lionfish app is at the Apple Store or Google Play.
The
app allows fishermen to report lionfish sightings and catches.
There
is also an interactive map which can be used to determine where lionfish are
being spotted.
There
is even a “show reef” option that maps all of Florida’s artificial reefs and
provides the location and depth at which each reef can be found.
If
you don’t have a smartphone, you can still share your lionfish
catches on Face book or Twitter.
Use
#FWCLionfish to make sure the state sees it as well.
Lionfish
are a nonnative, invasive species that threaten Florida’s native saltwater fish
and wildlife.
They
were introduced into Florida waters in the late 1980s but their population has
boomed in recent years – and that is causing real problems in Florida waters.
The
state is taking every action it can to slow their expansion, including removing
all commercial and recreational limits for the fish.
Earlier
this year state officials prohibited the importation of live lionfish; and made
it easier for them to be targeted by spear fishermen.
