APALACHICOLA NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE HOSTS EVENING LECTURE ON THE GEOLOGY OF FRANKLIN COUNTY’S BARRIER ISLANDS ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2015

APALACHICOLA - The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) will host an evening lecture, Shifting Sands:  How Historical Maps and Air Photos Can Reveal Changes in Franklin County’s Barrier Islands, on Thursday, January 22, from 5:30-7:30 pm. Geologist Jim Mott will show what he has learned from studying decades of historic maps.

A local part-time resident and Professional Geologist, Jim Mott has made something of a hobby of documenting some of the evolving changes across the barrier islands and will show some examples of how the islands have locally grown (or shrank) over the past 150 years, as evidenced from decades of historic maps and air photos.  Jim has a Ph.D. in Geology from Queen’s University in Canada, and has worked as a professional geologist over the past 25 years- mostly in Canada but also overseas and recently in the lower 48 states.

The lecture will be held at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, 108 Island Drive, Eastpoint, Florida. 850-670-7700. It is free and open to the public. No registration is required. For more information contact Anita Grove at 850-670-7708Anita.Grove@dep.state.fl.us
