Apalachicola Oyster Cook-off marks another successful year

Thousands of people came out Saturday to take part in the 5th annual Oyster Cook-off to raise money for the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department.

The weather was warm enough so people could sit outside, listen to live music, and enjoy the aromas of the various oyster dishes.

There were 15 entries in the cook-off, and dishes varied from oyster chowder and casserole to a number of "baked in the half-shell" dishes.

No two were the same.

The day went to John Solomon and Donna Duncan of Team Retsyo.

Second place went to Joel Norred and third place went to John Solomon and Donna Duncan of Team Retsyo representing the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce.

The Peoples choice award went to the Owl CafĂ©’ and Oyster City Brewing which raised 2700.00 through sales at their booth.

Total earnings have not been tallied – but organizers grossed 45 thousand dollars during the event, the year before the cook-off raised 32 thousand dollars total.

All of the money will help the Apalachicola Fire Department.
