MAJOR FUNCTION: The Director of Wakulla Environmental Institute is a managerial professional position . The primary responsibility of the person in this position will be to develop, market and direct WEI’s International Ecotourism Program and Comprehensive Hospitality Program, including development of a one hundred (100) item menu of tourist activities/trips/opportunities for visitors to Wakulla. The person in this position will identify grant opportunities, write grants, and manage program grants. The Director will assist the Executive Director in all facets of leading and directing the WEI, as needed, and assume duties of the Executive Director in the Executive Director’s absence. MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum five (5) years leadership experience at state, regional and local levels with an emphasis on administrative and strategic planning, economic development for communities, tourism, marketing and grant-writing, OR a High School Diploma and a minimum of 10 years leadership experience at state, regional and local levels with an emphasis on strategic planning, economic development for communities, tourism marketing and grant-writing. Previous experience as an Executive Director or Director of an environmental or tourism organization. A minimum of 5 years of experience in:
- Leading and directing a tourism development office, or organization
- Developing broad-based tourism initiatives
- Developing regional tourism marketing programs
- Conducting intrinsic resource studies that identify and describe natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources
- Integrating natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources into tourist opportunities throughout the region.
- Writing and implementing grants
SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING: Knowledge of the Wakulla community’s culture, history, government, workforce, professional association, community associations, and natural resources. Knowledge of best practices for sustainability. Knowledge of the processes of program development from creation to fruition. Knowledge of social media strategies. Skilled in developing tourist opportunity packages. Skilled in marketing to attract tourists to the Big Bend Region Skilled in effective interpersonal skills. Skilled in effective consensus building strategies. Skilled in problem solving. Skilled in the use of computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite and web based applications. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally. Ability to market the opportunities offered by WEI locally, state-wide, nationally and internationally. Ability to work with community partners to develop tourist related opportunities. Ability to design, manage, and deliver tourist activities and opportunities (i.e. day-trips, weekend trips, extended stays). Ability to lead programs and teams effectively. Ability to prepare and analyze reports and departmental budgets. Ability to supervise staff and work assignments. Ability to work independently and make independent judgments.
PREFERENCE: Previous or current involvement in the Wakulla community, through job-related or volunteer activities, is preferred. Preference will also be given to veterans and spouses who are eligible under the Veterans' Preference Law.
