Local cities and counties recognized as 2015 State Surgeon General Healthy Weight Community Champions

The Cities of Apalachicola and Port St Joe as well as Gulf, Liberty and Wakulla Counties have been recognized as 2015 State Surgeon General Healthy Weight Community Champions.
The cities are being recognized for how they have positively impacted the health environment in their area.
They will receive a certificate signed by Florida’s Surgeon General as well as personalized graphic art that can be placed on banners and road signs.
 The City of Apalachicola was recognize for its fit-trail along one of its most accessed park locations downtown and for it plans to create another fitness trail at the Mayor Van W. Johnson, Sr. Recreation and Community Service Complex Community Center, as part of Franklin County’s Healthiest Weight initiative.
All parks in the city also have active facilities, with most connected via multi-use trails.
City of Port St. Joe was recognized for providing free public transportation to and from the local farmer’s market and for installing an exercise fit-trail along one of its most accessed park locations.
Gulf County is being recognized for its agreement with Gulf County Transportation to provide free public transportation to and from the local farmer’s market.

That initiative will begin during the next farmer’s market season in 2015.
