Sea turtlesare being stunned in cold waters

It’s that time of year again…it’s turtle time! Yes, that’s right, cold stun sea turtle season is here and today we received 9 endangered green sea turtles which are our first turtles for 2015. Frigid temperatures in our area have had an effect on our local marine life; sea turtles in particular. Sea turtles are cold blooded animals that are effected by the temperatures in their environment. When cold temperatures affect their bodies they go into a hypothermic shock and can catch secondary illnesses if not treated. Very cold water temperatures of 40-45 degrees have been documented in the past few days by the FWRI Seasonal Water Temperature Buoy in St. Joe Bay. Thanks to our Gulf County board member Julia Cunningham and David Seay from Northwest Florida Marine Turtle Research Group, these turtles will have a better chance of survival. Today’s sea turtles will reside at Gulf World for rehabilitation along with 31 Kemp’s Ridley cold stun sea turtles we recently received from the New England area. Search and rescue efforts are still being conducted in Port St. Joe until the cold weather subsides.
