A Duke Energy power
pole carrying lines across the Bay to St. George Island was damaged Tuesday,
and the power company is still trying to find out who is responsible.
The pole is about a third of a mile from the island; it’s
currently leaning over, but is still operational.
The power company was alerted to incident at about noon on
Tuesday.
They said the damage appears to be the result of a vessel
striking one of the platforms that support the pole.
And it must have been a big vessel – the pole is 140 feet long
and buried 30 feet in the ground.
Duke Energy crews immediately began assessing the damage – they had
divers in the water to check the lower part of the pole too.
Duke Energy said every effort is being made to make sure island
residents do not lose power.
6 generators totaling 12 megawatts are in place at a staging
area on the island.
Duke energy has also activated additional personnel to assist
with damage assessments.
And the company would like to know who hit their power pole.
If you saw anything – please contact the sheriff’s department at
850- 670-8500 and report it.
