The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have
released a draft plan to conserve 60 fish and wildlife species in Florida and
are now looking for public comment on the proposal.
The Imperiled
Species Management Plan is a new
wildlife conservation model for Florida that takes a “big picture” view of
conservation by combining actions targeted to protect single species with
broader strategies to benefit multiple species.
The process of
determining how to best conserve dozens of Florida’s imperiled species listed as
either state-threatened or species of special concern began in 2010.
The list of animals
and birds that will be affected range from American oystercatchers, brown
pelicans and Alligator snapping turtles which are common in our area to the
Florida burrowing owl, the Florida bog frog and Suwannee cooter which are a
little less well known.
The draft plan and
a list of the species it would affect is available online for public review
and comment.
