County
officials are still looking for ways to keep people from dumping debris in
county ditches.
Franklin
county provides roadside pickup for yard trash, but that program is abused by
some people who throw more than just leaves and branches by the roadside.
Much
of the debris, which includes household gargbage, winds up in ditches where it
clogs up culverts.
Earlier
this month the county commission asked that the road department and solid waste
department create a policy for roadside dumping that would help keep the
ditches clean and cut down on flooding.
The
two departments were unable to come up with a policy but said they would
continue to contact homeowners who seem to be causing the most problems.
Commissioner
Pinki Jackel said that it’s not just homeowners causing the problems.
She
said there are commercial landscape companies that are also dumping huge
amounts of cuttings on the roadside, and the free pickup is not meant for
commercial businesses.
Solid
waste director Fonda Davis said if the contractor can be identified the
landfill will contact them and if that doesn’t fix the problem the companies
can be charged with illegal dumping.
