Franklin
County Commissioners and the local Tourist Development Council are taking the
first steps at creating a memorial for local oystermen who have died on the
water.
The commission has discussed
creating a memorial in the past but has never gotten past the discussion stage.
That may be about to change.
Tourist Development Council chief
Curt Blair said a local metalsmith from Apalachicola has offered to create a 7
foot metal sculpture of an oyster that could be placed at the Visitors center
in Eastpoint.
She has offered to donate the
work to the county.
Commissioners say that might be a
good way to memorialize oystermen who have died on the water.
The Commission voted last week to
have the Tourist Development Council look at some of the other work the artist
has done and bring a proposal back to the County commission.
