FWC - Fish and Wildlife Research Institute
SECTION: Marine Fisheries Research, Fisheries-Independent Monitoring
LOCATION: East Point, Florida

Funding for this position is provided by a five-year federal grant, subject to annual renewals.

DESCRIPTION
Participate in all aspects of the Fisheries-Independent Monitoring program with emphasis on participating in fisheries field sampling trips (including offshore research cruises) following defined procedures, processing field and laboratory samples following standardized protocols, processing side scan and video data, assist with proofing and correcting of data to ensure accurate entry.
The incumbent will be responsible for completing fish and invertebrate identifications following strict QA/QC protocols using a microscope and/or video reading, assisting with proper fisheries-independent monitoring training of new staff to include QA/QC of sampling methods, gear deployments, and fish identifications; and assisting with QA/QC check programs and routine data summaries to ensure quality fisheries data are properly recorded from sampling events (as needed).
Responsibilities will also include assisting with the maintenance and repair of sampling gears and research vessels used in routine fisheries monitoring; maintaining scientific collection records; and will be expected to participate in public outreach efforts as appropriate or assist other Institute programs as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the natural sciences. Valid driver's license.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: of juvenile and adult fish and invertebrate identification using dichotomous keys; of methods and gear used for collection of fisheries samples; of use of personal computers and database software.
Ability to: perform strenuous physical activities under arduous conditions (e.g. inclement weather, rough water, boat engine exhaust, shoreline wading) while conducting field sampling (up to 5 day trips away from the office); to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships, to work both independently and on a team; work in excess of 40 hours per week; and maintain a valid driver's license.
Skill needed: to safely operate and trailer vessels less than 26' in length.
