Repairs to the Historic Chapman building in
Apalachicola could cost 50 thousand dollars more than originally thought, and
that has county commissioners wondering what they will have to do to pay for
it.
Commissioners
agreed this year to spend 67 thousand dollars in county money to repair the
roof on the Chapman building.
That’s
in addition to a 50 thousand dollar grant the county received for the work.
Last
week the board learned that the damage to roof may be more extensive than
originally thought and the additional repairs could add another 50 thousand
dollars to the cost – money the county doesn’t have.
County
commissioners are investigating some options with the City of Apalachicola that
could lead to the Apalachicola library moving into the auditorium section of
the Chapman building.
The
Apalachicola library has grant money that could help pay for the repairs; at
this time the library is working on plans to construct a new building right
next door to the Chapman Building.
All
of the plans are dependent on whether they would disrupt the Doctor’s office which
leases the office portion of the Chapman building.
Commissioners
said they won’t approve any action that would disrupt the medical office.
Commissioners
decided that would schedule a workshop on the Chapman Building in the near
future so that all of the parties, including Apalachicola city officials, the city
library, the county commission and the doctor’s office can discuss the issue
further and decide what works best for everyone.
