Beautiful weather brought a nice crowd to St.
George Island this weekend for the 33rd annual Charity Chili Cook-off and
Auction.
Nunn
Better Also Chili out of Fort Pierce, Florida took first place in the
professional chili cook-off, earning a 500 dollar cash prize and the
opportunity to compete for 25 thousand dollars at the National chili cook-off.
2nd
place and 300 dollars went to Chad West and Yellow Creek Swamp Sauce chili out
of Tallahassee, and third place and 200 dollars went to Bill Avery and the Blue
Water Cooking company also from Tallahassee.
There
were 39 teams in the competition this year.
There
was also a salsa competition – won by Cheryl Merrill who will get to go to the
national salsa competition for her win.
The
crockpot chili winner this year was Pamela Addison of Tallahassee.
Pat
O’Brien out of Virginia won the Mister Hot Sauce title this year and Allie
Bonevento won the Miss Chili Pepper title for the second year in a row.
Team
toilet bowl won the showmanship award, probably because they were selling shots
in a two-person outhouse.
You
can see pictures of the winners and of the chili cookoff on the news page
at oysterradio.com or on our facebook page.
The
St. George Island Fire Department is still totaling the amount raised over the
weekend and expect to release figures later this month.
All
of the money raised on Saturday helps fund the St. George Island Fire
Department and first responders unit – it makes up about half of their budget.
