17th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show
Apalachicola Antique & Classic Boat Show

Even with threats of thunderstorms predicted all week for the Saturday of the boat show and a few cancellations. The boat show ended up a great event with over 20 boats, 19 cars and 9 vendors, all believing that the rain was going to hold off. Even as the skies stayed a little overcast during the day with brief hints of the sun's rays shining thru. The rain did hold off and everyone who attended had a great time. Just as the show was getting started around the corner at 98 and Water Street came 17 Shelby Cobra's from the Tallahassee Cobra Club. They had originally planned to come to the event but had reservations on the impending weather. In the end they decided they were going to take the beautiful drive on the Forgotten Coast Highway and participate. The Governor Stone was on hand for show goers to tour and get a history lesson about the antique vessel. During the Judging Apalachicola's own the "Buddy's Boys" Shrimp boat was pulled to the Riverfront Park dock for unloading and ended up with the title of "Best Local Work Boat". When presenting the award to the owner Tommy Ward he said he was thrilled to death and he would proudly display this in his store. The other category winners were as Follows:

Best Overall Boat: Will Marsh's Sailboat No Strings Attached
Best Locally Built Boat: Jim Doherty's 16' Duck Trap
Best Home Built Boat: Rowboat by Richard Stroup
Best Large Sailing Vessel: Governor Stone
Best Restoration: Cletus Heaps 13' Thompson
Best Antique Car & Boat: Cletus Heaps for his Thompson and Studebaker
Best Local Work Boat: Buddy's Boys
Best Runabout: Bud Harrison's TOYII
Best Sailboat: The "Pamela" 17' Spirit
Best Paddle Craft: Judy McFarland's hand crafted canoe "Etowah"
Best Classic Boat: Greg Russell's 1953 Thompson
Best Outboard Motors: Steve Maloney for his classic collection of Antique motors
Best Fiberglass: Jim Savage for his boat named after himself "Savage"
Best Classic Car Paint: Tan Studebaker
Best Classic Car: Ed Springer's 1962 Corvette
Best Overall Car: Harry Arnold's 1985 Rolls Royce Corniche

We at the Chamber would like to thank everyone who came out for the 17th Antique & Classic Boat Show this year and look forward to next year.

Forgotten Coast Plein Air
May 1st - 11th
More than 20 nationally acclaimed artists will gather on Florida's Forgotten Coast in early May to participate in the 10th annual Florida's Forgotten Coast Plein Air Invitational, America's Great Paint-Out, May 1-11, 2015. Painters will set up their easels and pull out their brushes to document the landscape and culture of authentic "Old Florida" - the coastal stretch of scenic North Florida between Mexico Beach and Alligator Point. "Plein Air", a French word, simply translated means "open air". The roots of plein air painting are found in 19th-century Europe. An Englishman, John Constable, believed that artists should forget "formulas" and trust their own vision in finding truth in nature.  The event includes 5 exhibits across the coast, daily artist demonstrations, 2 workshops, art sales and a series of public receptions. Art enthusiasts visited the exhibits and attend the many free special events that occur throughout the 10 day event.  The Grand Patrons Party will be held in May 10, 2014 6:30-10:00pm at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture, and Art. Art sales and debut of Artists' Choice paintings, $40 ticket. Call (800) 378-8419 for more info.

Historic Apalachicola Home & Garden Tour
May 1st-2nd
From the canopied Shadow Lane neighborhood to the long vistas of the avenues in the historic district and the charming side streets that sequester special treasures, Apalachicola has some very exceptional treats in store for its spring tour of homes.  The many renovations and restorations currently underway among the city's residences and businesses attest to community as well as personal pride.  This year the houses run the gamut from imposing two-story homes to quaint cottages of yesteryear and new construction.
The featured house for the 2015 tour is the home of Anne and Clint Eason.  One of the most stately homes on Ave. C this Queen Anne-style home, constructed of local pine and black cypress, dates back to 1892.  Interestingly, it was erected on the site of the former county jail.  Built by local merchant Rudolph Collins, the house later became known as the Lovett house for the many decades that this large family shared these living quarters.  Anne Eason comments that "This is the Collins/ Lovett house.  We are blessed to be custodians. Nurturing feelings envelop us here."  In the year 2000, the house was fully restored by local contractor, Bill Barnes, for former owner, Beverly Austin.  The following year it was honored with the Florida State Chrysalis Award for Historic Preservation.  There are many wonderful architectural details in the home including the original gingerbread, doors, fireplaces and windows.  The kitchen and a room upstairs have been added, yet the integrity of the original home has been maintained.  The house is enhanced by the Eason's comfortable and inviting decor and their use of a mixture of antiques and contemporary and custom-built pieces.  Art work abounds from whimsical paintings and sculpture to spectacular woodcarvings and pottery by Anne Eason herself.  The stylish chicken coop in the back garden houses a variety of exotic poultry.  Visitors to the house will find much to delight them in this home.
Evensong service at Trinity Episcopal Church will be held on Friday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m.This service provides the traditional opening for the home tour.  It will be followed by a reception to which all are invited. Homes will be open only on Saturday, May 2, from10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  Pre-sale tickets will be available at $20 until the day of the event.  OnSaturday, May 2, ticket sales will begin at 9:30 a.m. at $25 per ticket. A gourmet lunch will be served at Benedict Hall on the grounds of Trinity Church from 11:00 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.during the tour. In addition, a silent auction, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., will be a part ofSaturday's festivities.
Guests to Apalachicola can enhance their weekend experience by allowing time to visit the many historical buildings and churches, museums, inns and parks that mark this historic town as a truly original locale.  We welcome you to join us for the weekend and come back again and again.

APALACHICOLA NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE HOSTS LECTURE
May 72:00-3:00pm

~Learn about the Migratory Songbirds of St. George Island ~
APALACHICOLA- Thursday, May 72:00-3:00pm, Armando Aispuro and Melanie Mancuso will speak about their studies of migratory songbirds that use St. George Island, Florida, as a stopover on their migration north. Migration is an energy intensive process for birds crossing the Gulf of Mexico from the Neotropics. St. George Island offers the first landfall for a wide diversity of birds to rest and refuel. Aispuro and Mancuso are measuring the importance of this coastal barrier island to the persistence of these sensitive avian populations, and to gauge how climate change may disrupt this yearly cycle.
Melanie Mancuso is from New Orleans and received her B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of New Orleans in 2009.  She has worked on various research projects across the United States with a range of organisms including threatened and endangered species.  Melanie is currently a student at Delaware State University pursuing a M. S. degree in the Natural Resources program.  Her research involves the study of barrier island ecosystems as a vital resource for migrating avian species and the potential effects of global climate change.  Her research is being conducted at Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, Florida.  She is advised by Dr. Christopher Heckscher.  Melanie joined ECSC in 2015.
Armando Aispuro received his BS in Wildlife from Humboldt State University. Since then, he has worked in tropical America and Asia, and the US studying various aspects of avian ecology, evolution, and conservation. He will be investigating barrier islands as resources for migrating birds at Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Aispuro and Mancuso are supported by the Environmental Cooperative Science Center, a part of NOAA's Educational Partnership Program whose mission is to train the next generation of scientists and increase our understanding of coastal systems.

ANERR Workshop: Living Shorelines
The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR)
May 15th
will host a workshop on Living Shorelines on Friday, May 15, 2015, 9:30-11:30 am. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the St George Island Plantation Homeowners' Association at the St George Island Plantation Clubhouse. Zach Schang with the Northwest Florida Aquatic Preserves Office in Pensacola will talk about living shorelines vs. harden shorelines. He will discuss how to evaluate a shoreline by considering the physical factors such as wave energy, prevailing wind and wave direction, vegetation, and soil type. He will also present living shoreline methods, materials, permitting, and share success stories of local living shorelines.
Coastal erosion is a natural process. It is caused by currents, wave action, wind, storms and even boat wakes. The traditional use of harden methods like seawalls and rip rap can often increase coastal erosion in neighboring properties and remove the ability of the shoreline to carry out natural processes. Alternatively, living shorelines use plants, sand, and limited use of oyster shells or rock to provide shoreline protection and maintain valuable habitat that stabilizes the shoreline, protects the surrounding riparian and intertidal environment, increases water quality via filtration of upland run-off, and creates habitat for aquatic and terrestrial species.
The lecture is free and registration is required. For more informationplease contactAnita Grove at 850-670-7708 orAnita.Grove@dep.state.fl.us or Margo Posten at 850-670-7719Margaret.Posten@dep.state.fl.us
