Commissioner Adam H. Putnam Encourages Organizations to Become Summer BreakSpots to Provide Food to Children
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—In preparation for children’s summer breaks from school, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam is asking that organizations throughout Florida become Summer BreakSpots, where children under 18 can access free, nutritious meals, recreational fun and educational activities. Commissioner Putnam is dedicated to enhancing children’s nutrition, which leads to success in the classroom, and ensuring that resources are targeted to areas where they are most needed. Interested organizations can visitSummerFoodFlorida.org for more information.
“More than 1.8 million Florida children rely on school lunch throughout the school year, and we must ensure that there is continuity in their ability to access nutritious meals when school is out,” Commissioner Adam H. Putnam stated. “Since the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has run this program, we have seen participation increase by 21 percent, and we would like to continue on this upward trend.”
Last year, the program provided more than 13.5 million meals to more than 300,000 children throughout the summer.
Summer BreakSpot is part of the national Summer Food Service Program, a federally funded program operated by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered in Florida by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
