Franklin
County is cracking down on people using the county’s roadside yard trash
program as their own garbage company.
Franklin
County provides roadside pickup for certain types of yard trash, specifically
leaves and small branches, but that program has been abused by some residents
and businesses.
It
also allows for yard trash like old patio furniture and even some household
goods like rugs, furniture and appliances.
Some
people hide household garbage under the yard trash; People also put larger
pieces of yard trash than is allowed on the roadside.
It’s
not just homeowners abusing the program, but also commercial landscape
companies that are dumping huge amounts of cuttings on the roadside.
Recently
the county decided it will no longer clean up household trash thrown on the
side of the road.
They
hope that step will keep people from throwing it there in the first place.
The
county is also sending letters to every landscape company it can telling them to
dispose of their own yard trash and not to leave their cuttings on the roadside.
Some
county officials and many residents feel the only way to truly address the
problem is to mandate county-wide garbage pickup.
