Sacred Heart Clinicians Work Overtime for Student Physicals

PORT ST. JOE, Fla. – An all-volunteer staff of 30 clinical professionals from Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf and Sacred Heart Medical Group recently dedicated their after-hours time and expertise to provide free physical examinations for 150 student athletes from area middle schools and high schools.
Each year, Sacred Heart provides free physical exams for student athletes in the community. This year, the number of students needing exams required the staff to stay at the office until 9:30 p.m., until the last student was seen.
The team of physicians, nurses, physical therapists and other clinicians provided the exams in the Office Building next to the hospital. Dr. Rachel Bixler, family medicine in Port St. Joe; Dr. Ryan Pharr, family medicine in Apalachicola; and Nancy Anderson, Nurse Practitioner in Wewahitchka, conducted physical examinations, while physical therapists, nurses and other clinicians checked vision, tested strength and balance, recorded height and weight, and took vital signs of each student.
“Although it made for a long work day, we are glad to provide this service to our student athletes,” says Dr. Bixler. “We are all about helping these students avoid injuries. We can help them stay healthy by identifying physical conditions that need to be addressed before they dive into their sports activities.”
“This is a great example of Sacred Heart’s commitment to promote wellness throughout Gulf and Franklin Counties,” said Roger Hall, President, Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf. “I am proud of our clinical team for volunteering and going above-and-beyond to make sure no students were turned away.”
