New artificial reef being deployed off Carrabelle this weekend

There will be some new reef material going down in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Carrabelle this weekend.

A company called Walter Marine will deploy 26 prefabricated reef modules weighing about 92 tons as an addition to the Nicholas Cureton Memorial reef.

That reef sits about 10 miles southeast of Carrabelle in 45 to 55 feet of water.

The entire artificial reef system is now nearly a mile long and 600 feet wide.

The plan is for the barges to park off Dog Island Friday night and then deploy the reef material on Saturday.

The reef is a joint project between the Organization for Artificial reefs, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the City of Carrabelle.

It is being partially paid for by the Sport Fish Restoration Fund Grant Project which is funded through a federal tax collected from the sale of marine supplies.
