WWII Museum Movie Theatre
Saturday at 1015 hours, August 29, 2015

This is one of the all-time great classic movies of its genre. Unlike most Hollywood movies that use historical events as backgrounds for sappy and insipid love stories, the main "character" of this movie is the event itself. For the Battle of Guadalcanal is one of the key battles in all of history. This momentous event, which took place at the same time the Soviet Union was battling the Germans at Stalingrad, marked the end of Japanese expansion in the south Pacific and the beginning of the process that would lead to Japan's ultimate defeat. It should also be noted that the Battle for Guadalcanal was entirely an American operation, fought several thousands miles away from home and against an implacable enemy that had months, if not years, to prepare their defenses. Moreover, this battle took place just months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The acting is great, the story compelling and is all-in-all a movie that is definitely worth watching.

Admission is by donation, and appreciated. This film is one in a series shown monthly to educate our visitors on the sacrifices made, for us, by our WWII generation. Free popcorn will be served.

The Carrabelle History Museum and Historical Society presents: "Early People of the Forgotten Coast: 1500 to 1800"
on Saturday, September 12th. Our three speakers will cover 300 years of local history in three hours! Dr. Madeline Carr, Dr. Joe Knetsch and James Levy are walking encyclopedias of Florida History.

Our spring program covered the first people to inhabit our coast. This program will pick up where we left off, covering a time when Europeans were exploring our state, remaining Native Americans were learning to trade and work with them, and African Americans were seeking safe havens. Starting with the Spaniards arriving in St. Marks, to the destruction of the colony at the old British fort on the Apalachicola River, our guest experts will introduce us to some fascinating characters.

An exhibit of black powder weapons used during that time period will be on display and ship wreck artifact conservator James Levy will be available to answer questions about his impressive collection.

This free program will be held from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday at the Franklin County Senior Center in Carrabelle located at 201 NW Avenue F. It is sponsored by the Franklin County Public Library, the Apalachicola Municipal Library and funded in part by Carrabelle CARES, the City of Carrabelle and the Franklin County Tourist Development Council.

For More Information contact: Carrabelle History Museum 850-697-2141 or Tamara Allen 850-524-1153.

Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta
Saturday October 3rd
It's time once again for you to challenge your friends, your family, and your colleagues to build boats out of stuff that any normal person would take to the dump and enter them in the Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta at the Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory. Boats can be as artistic or as ugly as you want to make them. Just build 'em and they will float . . . more or less.

You landlubbers will be busy ashore cheering on the captains and crews of these outrageously constructed vessels as they sail, row, or scull around the course, topple over, or slowly sink into Apalachee Bay. Watch the Regatta from various shoreline vantage points around the lab on either side of the boat basin. Enjoy good food, have loads of fun, all while learning about recycling and how to reduce the impact of plastics in our marine environments.
