Enjoy a free lecture at the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve Visitor’s Center onMonday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m., featuring Dr. Brian Balmer discussing the effects of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill on bottlenose dolphins along the Gulf of Mexico coast.
Balmer, a scientist at the Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, S.C., is leading a project assessing the long-term trends and population structure of the St. Joseph Bay bottlenose dolphin following the oil spill.
Balmer worked with the Chicago Zoological Society’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program for 12 years and graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Wildlife Science and Biology. 
About the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve
The St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Coastal Office as part of the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. The preserve provides protection for native species habitat and archaeological and historical sites, as well as opportunities for natural resource-based recreation within its 5,019 acres.
