Franklin
County commissioners are putting their support behind a proposed shooting range
project west of Apalachicola.
Apalachicola
police officer Chase Rickards asked for county support this week for his plans
to build a shooting range on a little over 20 acres near Tilton Road and
Highway 98.
He
said he hopes to make it a beautiful facility that would not only provide a
location to train local police and residents but would also be used for
shooting competitions and bring in people from around the area.
The
facility would be named after Fred Earl Babb, the only Apalachicola police
officer ever killed in the line of duty.
The
project is still in the planning stages – he still needs to get approval to
have the range near the Apalachicola airport.
But
once he has approval, the county says it will help clear the property and
provide whatever other support it can.
Officer
Rickards said the City of Apalachicola has also pledged its support of 50
thousand dollars.
