Renovation work is continuing at the
Historic Fort Coombs Armory in Apalachicola.
A
construction company called Birkshire Johnstone out of Pensacola is doing over
850 thousand dollars in renovations to the building which includes installing a
central heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
The
work also includes adding a new warming kitchen and handicapped accessible
restrooms and repairing the windows on the 4th street wall.
The
windows which were rehabilitated are currently being reinstalled in the
building.
The
new air conditioning units have been set on their pedestals on the outside of
the building, and the ductwork is being installed inside.
The
wall treatment in the new handicapped accessible restrooms is being put in
place and the new warming kitchen if framed up.
The
project is on schedule to be completed around the first of the year.
Once
the work is complete, the county plans to use the armory as a convention center as well as a
destination for private events like weddings.
The
funds to pay for the work were provided by the Franklin County Tourist
Development Council and the State of Florida Division of Historic Resources.
