The Franklin County Tourist
Development Council is starting the process to create a memorial for local
oystermen who have died on the water.
The TDC will begin taking
proposals early next year for what they envision as a maritime memorial and
garden on county-owned property near the Eastpoint Visitor Center.
TDC Administrator Curt Blair said
the TDC wants to make sure that the design will provide a fitting tribute to
those who have lost their lives on the water and that the memorial is done with
great sensitivity to the families that the memorial will represent.
The memorial would include the
names of those who have died on the water and could be updated if needed.
The TDC will start seeking proposals
from artists and other interested parties in January and will close the
selection process next April.
They will also hold workshops
with the community to help select the best proposals before bringing the final selection
for county approval sometime next summer.
Mister Blair said the TDC
currently has about 10 thousand dollars budgeted for the memorial, and there
could be additional money from VisitFlorida.
