The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says more than
13,000 rape test kits around the state have not been submitted for processing –
including a few from our area.
On Monday the FDLE released results of a study on the number of
untested kits, the results from that study will be presented to the Florida Legislature
this year in the hopes they will fund the estimated 9 to 32 million dollars
needed to manage the backlog.
According to the study, the Franklin County Sheriff’s office has
4 rape kits that need to be submitted.
Wakulla County has 10.
There were none in Liberty or Gulf Counties.
Rape kit testing backlogs has been an issue across the U.S.
In September, federal officials said an estimated 70,000 rape
kits sitting in laboratories and evidence collection rooms across the country
will be tested.
