There
were a record number of shark attacks around the world in 2015 – and Florida
continues to hold the dubious distinction of shark attack capitol of the world.
The
International Shark Attack File investigated 164 incidents of alleged
shark-human interaction in 2015; they found that 98 of the incidents were
unprovoked – that’s up from 72 the year before.
Out
of those there were only 6 deaths world-wide.
The
rest were "Provoked attacks" which happens when a diver grabs a
shark, when someone gets bit feeding a shark, or they get bit while taking a
shark off a hook or out of a net.
It
also considered provoked when a shark bites a boat which happened 14 times in
2015.
The
vast majority of sharks attacks happened in US waters.
There
was a total of 59 unprovoked attacks in US waters last year, 30 of those
happened in Florida.
Brevard
County had the most incidents with 8, followed by 7 in Volusia County.
There
were 4 attacks in Duval County and 2 each in Palm beach and St. Johns Counties.
Broward, Collier, Indian River, Martin,
Miami-Dade, Nassau, and St. Lucie counties saw 1 shark attack each last
year.
Additional U.S. attacks were recorded in North
and South Carolina, Hawaii, California, Texas, Mississippi and New York.

There were no attacks on SCUBA divers in 2015.
